Food adventure @ Dead Man Expresso

Another year, another 15km Run for the Kids… another post-run brunch! This year, we decided to walk the ‘short distance’ over to South Melbourne’s popular Dead Man Expresso for our feed.

*Note. Even the shortest of distances feel like quite a stretch when your legs are worn out!

Latte and apple juice.

Potato and herb hash - crumbed potato hash with pancetta, green tomato salsa, fried eggs & sour cream.

I could smell the sensational herb aroma wafting from the potato as soon as the dish was placed in front of me, with the dill standing out in particular. I could see its presence as soon as I cut into the hash. But despite all of this, the potato tasted disappointingly bland. The crispy crumbing of the hash, salty crunch of the fried pancetta and freshness of the tomatoes really enhanced the overall flavour profile and lifted the entire dish.

The dishes eaten by the others (just photos):

Green pancakes - spinach, green onions, green chilli pancakes, with lime butter, smoked salmon & a poached egg.

Another shot of the salmon.

Dead Man Reuben - pastrami with house made sauerkraut, Swiss cheese & dill pickle.

image

Eggs on toast - poached free range eggs with avocado.

image

Avocado - avocado & herb smash with pomegranate, goat cheese & buckwheat.

While the actual dish fell short of my expectations that arose after reading the potato hash’s description, the carb`iness of the potato made it a great post-run meal. Given the laid back vibe of the eatery, friendliness of the staff and the enjoyment of the dishes that were eaten by the others (I hear the green pancakes are a go!), a return visit may be warranted. After next year’s run perhaps?
