Food adventure @ Duchess of Spotswood, take two

After an enjoyable first visit to Duchess of Spotswood last year, I figured it was high time a return visit took place. So whilst mulling over venues for a brunch session with Mr TMF, we decided on DoS. 


The venue was just as busy as it was previously, and we had to wait for 10 minutes for a table.

Duchess of Pork - crispy pig’s jowl with fried eggs, rich truffle sauce, and sourdough toast. 


Again, I couldn’t bring myself to order something so rich and heavy for breakfast, but luckily for me, Mr TMF did and I was able to steal a bite. It was everything I had envisioned and more. The pig’s jowl had a pulled pork texture and was very tender. But it was the aromatic flavour imparted by the truffle shavings and oil that stole the show. 


Breakfast of Champignons - potato and barley hash, with field mushrooms, duxelle, Stilton, poached eggs and toast. 


In the mood for mushrooms, I ended up ordering the breakfast of champignons dish again. The mushrooms were gorgeously tender, and the hash brown possessed a crispy crunch. The overly-salty flavour that I had encountered the first time around wasn’t an issue this time. I did, however, find the flavour of the Stilton cheese to be quite pungent and overpowering, and relied on the oozy yolks and blandness from the egg whites to counter this. It helped a little. 

If I have learnt anything from my second visit, it is that the Duchess of Pork is the way to go. One of their more popular items that often sells out, I can’t imagine the sensational flavour profile of the dish ever going awry. Now, to remember this for the third visit!
