Food adventure @ Los Latinos

Sunday 15th October 2011.

I had a little bit of time in my hands in between students so I took my brother out for some Mexican food, west side style. All this time right under my nose, a restaurant that serves up selections from not only Mexico but also El Salvador and Chile… who knew?

Corn chips and dips - warm corn tostadas served with tomatillo salsa, spicy cheese sauce and chunky tomato salsa.

Very basic but it definitely hit the spot for our rumbling stomachs. The cheese sauce was something different but oh so delicious. Not so much for my brother though because he doesn’t like his cheeses. Oh well, more for me!

Tacos de carne - grilled porterhouse steak fillet marinated in mexican spices served on soft tortillas with chirrimol, guacamole and a side of salsa Roja and chipotle.

My brother forgot there was a side of salsa and was past the half way point when they brought it out. I was slightly skeptical when I saw the large chunks of meat (as opposed to beef mince) but it actually worked out quite well. The dish oozes softness. The steak meat was very tender and well marinated. The soft shell taco was quite substantial in regards to it’s thickness but was not so much to the extent that it just tasted like too much flour. The toppings provided fresh to the taste and the dish’s appearance. I’m a crunchy-shell-over-soft-shell sorta gal but this may very well be the dish to change that opinion…

Completo Chileno - poached salchicha in a hot dug bun with lettuce and a guacamole finish with mustard mayonnaise and tomato sauce.

An item from their Chilean selections, this was one whopper of a hot dog. I have never had a hot dog with so much topping before… It was definitely a struggle to eat but luckily with the corn chips at hand, I could scoop off a bit at a time. While it was delicious, the flavours did get to be a little too much for me to handle so I shared the rest with the brother.

All in all, I would definitely come back. I wasn’t holding my breath in anticipation when I first saw the place. It looked like a typical take away shop and so naturally I was expecting take away quality food. How pleasantly surprised I was! Cheap food, great taste AND close proximity to home. What more could you ask for?
